TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Tuskegee cross country program will compete in the 2024 SIAC XC Championships on Wednesday morning, set to take place in Macon, Georgia at the Georgia Premier Cross Country Course.
The first race of the day will be the men's 8K that will commence at 9 a.m. ET, followed by the women's 5K race at 10 a.m. ET. An awards ceremony for both races will follow the women's race.
Junior phenom
Anaya Martin will make her much-anticipated return to the SIAC Cross Country Championship debut this week, having been named SIAC Women's Runner of the Week three times this season. The Maryland native began the season with two strong performances in 5K races, clocking a then personal record time of 20:22.6 in the Montevallo Falcon Classic in September. In the last meet at Florida State, Martin bested her own 5K record by running 19:59.2.
Martin has competed in one 6K event during the season, earlier this month at the Georgia Tech XC Invitational when she crossed the line at 24:32.5 to set yet another personal best.
Meanwhile, men's standouts
Dennis Kibet and
Edgar Kosgei will make their postseason debuts at the 2024 SIAC Championships, both coming off setting new personal bests in the month of October.
Kibet set his new PR with a time of 29:09.3 earlier this month in the Florida State XC Invitational (October 11), while Kosgei set his mark of 29:00.9 at the Georgia Tech XC Invitational (October 4).
The Golden Tigers will look to improve on their finishes at the 2023 SIAC Cross Country Championship. Last season, Tuskegee found themselves inside the five in both the men's and women's meets, with women taking fourth behind All-SIAC performances from Martin and
Akierah Walker. Martin led the way with a time of 22:10.4, finishing seventh overall, followed by Walker at 22:46.4, while three other runners finished before the 27-minute mark.
The men finished fifth last post season, led by returner
Austin Stokes who finished 23rd overall with a 31:21.0, while his teammates all finished before the 36-minute mark for the fifth place finish.
