Jones Named New Head Coach for Cross Country and Track and Field Programs

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Tuskegee Department of Athletics has hired former Division I coach LaShaunda Jones to be the next track and field coach at Tuskegee University, announced on Wednesday by the department.

Jones comes to Tuskegee after serving her second stint as an assistant with the Alabama State program. Prior to her latest time with the Hornets, Jones was the head coach for her alma mater, Alabama A&M from 2015 to 2021.

Under her leadership, Alabama A&M track and field saw numerous All-SWAC selections on the men's and women's side along with multiple SWAC champions in their events, with the most recent being the 2021 SWAC Indoor and Outdoor Pole Vault Champion Danice Loney.

Jones, was the first ever Southwestern Athletic Conference track champion for Alabama A&M after they transitioned to Division I. As a team captain and honor student in 2001, she also won the SWAC 60-meter indoor championship and was named Huntsville Athlete of the Year.

Jones immediately joined the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs upon her graduation in 2001. She then was promoted to an assistant coach, a position she held until 2005, prior to an 11 year stint as an assistant at Alabama State.

During her time with the Hornets, Jones was a part of 17 SWAC championships, while also helping numerous Hornet record holders, SWAC indoor and outdoor individual champions and NCAA regional and national qualifiers, along with nationally ranked athletes and relay teams.

"We are very happy to bring someone with Coach Jones' experience into our department to lead this program," Ruffin stated. "She has not only coached at the Division I level, but was also a very successful student-athlete at that level and we hope those lessons and experiences will help both our cross country and track and field programs thrive."
