TUSKEGEE, Ala. __ The Tuskegee women's tennis team is set to begin its 2025 season with a road test against West Alabama on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Vaughan Tennis Complex.
The Golden Tigers enter the match coming off an impressive 2024 campaign that saw them capture the SIAC Championship and earn a spot in the NCAA South Regional Tournament.
West Alabama, ranked No. 12 in the nation, is looking to bounce back from a 4-3 loss to Alabama State in its season opener.
Tuskegee is aiming to build upon last season's success, where they dominated SIAC play and made a deep postseason run. The Golden Tigers return several key players who contributed to their championship-winning season.
The team excelled in both singles and doubles play last year, and they will look to carry that momentum into the 2025 season opener.
West Alabama enters the matchup at 0-1 after a competitive loss to Alabama State, where they split singles play but were swept in doubles action. The Tigers showed strong performances from Alexa Milliam, Valentina Mutilba, and Shaira Rivera, each securing wins in singles play. However, the team struggled in doubles, losing all three matches, which ultimately cost them the overall match.
West Alabama's lineup is led by experienced players who have demonstrated consistency in singles competition. Milliam, who played at the No. 3 position, secured a decisive win in her opening match, while Rivera delivered a victory at No. 1 singles. Despite the loss, the team remains a formidable opponent, especially on their home courts.
For Tuskegee, this match presents an opportunity to test itself against a nationally ranked opponent early in the season. The Golden Tigers will need to focus on securing key wins in singles play while also improving their doubles performance to gain the early advantage.
With a deep and experienced roster, Tuskegee is prepared to compete at a high level.
The season opener will be a key measuring stick for both teams, as Tuskegee looks to make a statement, and West Alabama aims to rebound from their opening loss
