Ivory Wins National Junior Tennis & Learning Essay Contest

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee freshman tennis player Jamiya Ivory (Gardendale, Ala.) has been named a winner of the 2022 National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) Essay Contest, announced by the judging committee.

The winners, range in age from 10 to 18, all participate in National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) chapters nationwide and were selected from entries submitted this summer. Ivory will be awarded a trip to New York this week as a luncheon in her honor will take place along with an opportunity to play tennis at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y.

Ivory, a two-star recruit out of Hope Christian Academy, was the number three player in the state of tennis in her class before deciding to attend Tuskegee. She entered the contest amongst participants nationwide as a member of her former NJTL chapter.

The question for the 2022 Essay Contest was, "Mayor David Dinkins was convinced that tennis instills confidence, character, sportsmanship and teamwork. He envisioned the sport as a vehicle to drive you closer to your dreams. Do you agree that tennis develops these positive qualities? Are there other skills or positive aspects gained from playing tennis? What are your dreams? How can tennis help you achieve those dreams and develop meaningful relationships?"

The National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network is a nationwide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. NJTLs are unique because they offer a variety of on-court programming and also educational and life skill components designed to enhance a child's overall development.

Founded in 1969, this growing network of tennis providers share similar values, ideals and goals by reaching out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play tennis, instilling in youngsters the values of leadership and academic excellence, and by giving all kids the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so they can derive a lifetime of enjoyment from the sport.

Deloitte, one of the world's largest professional services organizations, has become the first-ever presenting sponsor of the USTA Foundation NJTL Essay Contest. Deloitte has joined forces with the USTA Foundation to help under-resourced youth to advance their education and fulfill their potential.
