Preview: Softball Sets Sights on Capital City Classic

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee softball is set to travel to Jackson, Mississippi, to compete in the Capital city Classic at the JSU Softball Field.

The Golden Tigers will face host Jackson State, Grambling State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and Mississippi Valley State in a weekend filled with non-conference matchups.

Tuskegee enters the event with a 3-1 record, having opened the season with a win over Elizabeth City State and a doubleheader sweep of Talladega at home on Tuesday.

The Golden Tigers have been strong both offensively and defensively, showing promise as they aim for another competitive season.

ABOUT TUSKEGEE (2-1)
The Golden Tigers have been effective at the plate, hitting .387 as a team while recording 32 runs on 43 hits, including seven doubles, two triples, and a home run.

Caroline Clark has been hot so far, batting .833 (5-for-6) with a home run and five RBIs, while Nylah Strange-Lindley is off to a .500 start with a triple and two stolen bases. Alexis Thompson (.400, 3 RBIs, 1 double) and Jessica Morales (.308, 3 RBIs, triple, 3 stolen bases) have also been key contributors.

On the mound, Monica rose (2-0, 0.58 ERA, 17 strikeouts in 12 innings) has been dominant, keeping opponents off balance with her control and strikeout ability.

Kamya Hampton (1-1, 4.2o ERA, 13 strikeouts in 13.1 innings) has also provided depth in the circle.

Defensively, Tuskegee has a .927 fielding percentage, with only eight errors in four games. The Golden Tigers will look to continue their efficient defensive play against tough competition.

ABOUT JACKSON STATE (7-2)
The host Tigers are off to a strong start, led by an offense hitting .307 as a team with 54 runs scored.

Ariana Murillo has been their most productive hitter, batting .529 with six stolen bases, while Meah Almaraz (.476, four RBIs) has provided extra-base power. Jace Jackson (.423, 11 hits, 11 RBIs) has also been a force in the lineup.

On the mound, Sofia Gonzalez (3-0, 1.24 ERA, 17 IP) has been dominant, while Jorgina Gant (2.23 ERA, 2-0, 15.2 IP) gives Jackson State a deep pitching rotation.

ABOUT GRAMBLING STATE (3-5)
Grambling has been inconsistent to start the season but boasts a dangerous lineup.

The Tigers are batting .262 as a team, with Kamryn Broussard leading the way at .429 (9-for-21, 2 triples, 5 RBIs).

On the mound, Audrey Richardson (1-0, 0.57 ERA, 12.1 IP) has been the most effective pitcher, but the team's overall ERA of 4.07 has led to some high-scoring games.

ABOUT ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF (1-6)
UAPB has had a challenging start to their season, currently holding a 1-6 overall record. Their schedule has included both away and neutral-site games, with a 1-2 record in away games and 0-4 in neutral-site matchups.

The Lions have struggled offensively, hitting .189 as a team, with Ariana Gonzalez (.421, 5 doubles, 3 RBIs) being the lone bright spot.

Their pitching has also been a challenge, with a 6.30 team ERA, though Kayla Adams (0-3, 4.20 ERA, 20 IP) has been a workhorse.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE (1-9)
The Devilettes have also encountered a tough start, with a 1-9 overall record. Their games have been split between away (0-5) and neutral sites (1-4), and they are currently on an eight-game losing streak. The team is eager to reverse this trend and find success in the upcoming tournament.

Offensively, MVSU has struggled, recording a team batting average of .144. The lineup has managed only one extra-base hit in their first ten games, indicating a need for increased offensive output. The coaching staff is likely focusing on adjustments to improve contact and run production.

Their pitching staff holds a 10.84 team ERA, struggling to contain opposing offenses.

The Capital City Classic serves as a valuable early-season test for Tuskegee as they face off against a group of SWAC opponents.

With a solid start to the season, the Golden Tigers will look to continue their offensive efficiency and strong pitching performances to continue their strong non-conference schedule.
