SOUTH FULTON, Ga. __ The Tuskegee Golden Tigers men's and women's tennis teams closed the first ever SIAC Men's & Women's Tennis Fall Open with strong performances and several flight-championship victories, held Oct. 16-18 at the South Fulton Tennis Center.
The Golden Tigers captured multiple flight championships in both singles and doubles play while advancing several athletes deep into their respective brackets.
The opening day saw Tuskegee establish early momentum in doubles competition. The women's pairing of
Ayawavi Vania Dotse and
Leiloni Payton cruised to an 8-2 victory in Flight S over Savannah State to advance to the semifinal round.
Meanwhile, teammates
Gabrielle Blanks and
Ayana Cameron earned an 8-3 win over Albany State, along with the pairing of
Asia McRae and
Dayna Jackson taking an 8-1 win over Benedict.
On the men's side,
Miles Wilson and
Eliyahu Pinkney battled to an 8-6 triumph over their Benedict pairing to move into the next round.
In singles play, the Golden Tigers won all five of their single flights with Cameron, Dotse, Jackson, and McRae all collected wins.
On the men's side, Tuskegee went 2-3 in single flights, as
Emmanuel Wettey and Pinkney picked up wins, setting the stage for multiple competitive battles on the second day.
Friday's action featured another wave of Tuskegee success. On the men's side, Wettey took home the Flight K championship with a 7-5, 6-4 win, while Pinkney finished as a runner-up in Flight L following a 6-2, 6-3 loss.
Both
Justice Wilson and
Miles Wilson picked up third place finishes in Flight S and Flight M respectively, while
Jack Shaw advanced to the third-place game in Flight N with a straight set sweep.
For the women, the pairings of Dotse/Payton (Flight S), Blanks/Cameron (Flight T), and McRae/Jackson (Flight U) all advanced to the championship matches, while Geary and
Adjowa-Sika Serena Pascaline Geli fell 8-6 to battle on day three in the third-place game.
McRae also advanced to the Flight E singles championship match along with Jackson and Payton both advancing in Flight B to face each other. Geli also advanced to her championship match in Flight C, while Blanks and Cameron both won in their semifinal round matches in Flight D for another all-Tuskegee final.
Tuskegee closed the Fall Open with several championship finishes. The women's duos of Dotse/Payton, Blanks/Cameron, and McRae/Jackson all captured flight titles, while Geary/Geli took third place in Flight U.
In singles, Cameron, McRae, Payton and all took home flight championships, while Blanks, Dotse, and Jackson each secured consolation-round victories to close the weekend on a high note. On the men's side, Shaw finished third in Flight N with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
In total, Tuskegee earned three doubles flight titles, and three singles flight titles, along with multiple semifinal finishes between both programs. Tuskegee will return to competition this spring for its team dual-match schedule, where the Golden Tigers look to build on the momentum gained in South Fulton and contend for SIAC titles.
