Preview: CIAA-SIAC Softball Classic

TUSKEGEE __ Tuskegee softball will hit the road for the third straight weekend to start the season on Friday, as the team will compete in the CIAA-SIAC Softball Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.
 
The Golden Tigers are scheduled to six games from Friday, Feb. 16 to Sunday, Feb. 18. TU will start with games against Claflin and Lincoln on Friday, Virginia State and Fayetteville State on Saturday, and close with Winston-Salem State and Bowie State on Sunday.

Tuskegee comes into the CIAA-Softball Classic with a 2-4 record so far after competing in the season opening Mardi Gras Invitational and in the Red, White, Blue Classic.

TU suffered a trio of losses last weekend in Columbus, however picked up a 6-2 win over Georgia College & State. Senior Kamya Hampton (2-1) earned her second win of the season on just five combined hits at the plate in the win over GCSU. Hampton went 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out three of her 22 batters faced.
 
At the plate, senior Jada Chadwick led the way for the Golden Tigers, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored in the game. Third baseman Jessica Morales also had two hits against the Bobcats, along with scoring a run, while Victoria Harrison scored twice in the win.
 
Freshman Carole Ross has gotten off to a hot start this season, leading Tuskegee in several offensive categories. Ross is batting .500 with six hits, three doubles, a home run, six runs scored, two walks and 12 total bases. Morales has also been a key contributor at the plate, as she is batting .389 with seven hits, a double and a team-high five runs scored.

Hampton has led the TU pitching staff this season with a 3.88 ERA in 14 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work. Overall, the pitching staff currently owns a 4.24 ERA and has 18 combined strikeouts.
