LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Highlighted by senior
Anitria Sangster's two first-place finishes on the weekend, the Tuskegee Track and Field team opened the 2024 indoor season at the Urban League HBCU Classic presented by Humana on Saturday afternoon inside the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
Sangster's indoor wins occurred early in her Tuskegee debut, as the Florida Memorial transfer won the 60m event with a time of 7.63 seconds, an HBCU Indoor meet record, followed by taking first in the 200m with a mark of 25.08 seconds.
"It felt like I was right where I was supposed to be," Sangster explained on her feelings from the meet. "I felt when I came here that it was the right program for me, and at this point the fit is perfect, the switch has been turned on, and we want to keep it on the entire season."
Meanwhile, freshman
Amira Broussard also earned a top 20 finish in the women's 200, ending with a time of 27.55 (17th).
Tuskegee had a trio of top five finishes in the women's 600-meter event, in sophomore
Akierah Walker (1:45.63/3rd), freshman
Anaya Martin (1:52.71/4th), and sophomore
Madison Minga-Perry (1:59.29/5th).
Sophomore
De'Shell Carr was impressive in both jump events, taking home third place in both the high jump and long jump with marks of 1.45 meters and 5.00 meters.
Both
Danielle Wilson and
Victoria Bracy finished seventh and eighth in the women's weight throw at 9.84- and 9.75-meter marks, while the trio of Bracy (10.98m/7th), Wilson (10.63m/10th), and
Matealia Harper (9.49m/14th) earned top 15 finishes in the shot put.
The men's 60-meter prelims saw freshman
Justin Stith advance to the finals with a time of 7.09. The Orlando, Fla. native later edged out a sixth-place finish in the final heat with a time of 7.11 in the event.
TU went 7-8 in the men's 200-meter courtesy of freshman
Shawn Jarrett II and Stitten, who posted times of 22.97 and 22.98, respectively. Just outside the top ten was
Avery Thomas with a time of 23.36, while just outside the top 15 was
Lamont Brinson and
Jordan Webb at 23.93 and 24.19.
Dennis Toles paced the Golden Tigers by winning the 600 in 1:30.08 in his collegiate indoor debut, setting a HBCU Indoor meet record. The remaining runners from Tuskegee finished 3-5-6 in
Christian Sanders (1:34.54/3rd),
Christopher Taylor (1:36.70/5th), and
Antonio Heng (1:45.78/6th).
Sanders also competed in field events in the meet, finishing sixth in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.67 seconds, along with taking 10th in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.03 meters. Brinson finished right behind Sanders in the long jump, with 5.76 meters, taking 11th.
Following a 12th place finish in the men's shot put (10.40m), freshman
Skyler Carrillo took home a fourth-place finish in the men's weight throw to close out his first meet with a mark of 11.85 meters.
The men's and women's 4x400 teams also competed in the season opening indoor meet. The women had a time of 4:11.26 finishing third, while the men crossed at 3:50.35 for seventh. The men's 4x800 team also competed, taking second with a time of 9:31.83
