Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. | The Tuskegee University volleyball team fell in their season opener to Fairmont State 3-0 (14-25,14-25,13-25) in the first match of the Spike Out the Hunger Tournament hosted by Winston-Salem State University.
Pamela Allen led the way for Tuskegee (0-1) with four kills on 14 total attacks, recording a hitting percentage of .071 on the night. She also added six digs and one block assist in the loss. Meanwhile,
Donovan Wingfield contributed three attacks and hit .083 in her first collegiate match, while
Jacqueline Wilson and
Tiauna Travers each added two kills.
Morgan Scrivens led Tuskegee with 10 assists, while
Zahria Radford added 12 digs. Meanwhile,
Rachael Wood added one block solo and two block assists.
The team hit .017 for the match with 14 kills, 14 assists and 23 digs.
Tuskegee fell behind early in the opening set, before closing to within a point off the serve of Naliah Pruitt and using a block from Wood. Fairmont State was able to extend the lead in the opening set before pulling away for the 25-14 victory. In the second set, the two teams traded points through the first 12 services of the match with Tuskegee taking an early 7-6 lead on the service of Scrivens. Unfortunately, Fairmont State went on an 14-3 run to pull away in the second set for the 25-14 win.
In the final set, Fairmont State scored early and was able to pull away for the 25-13 victory to clinch the match.
Fairmont State was led by Courtney Kress and Breanna Bolt with nine kills each, while Kaitlyn Witsaman and Erin Harwood added seven kills each. The team hit .402 for the match in the win.
Tuskegee returns to action Saturday in the Spike Out the Hunger Tournament against West Virginia Wesleyan at 11 am (EST) and Shepherd at 4 pm (EST).
