Volleyball extends winning streak to three

Tigerettes take five-set match in Selma against Concordia College

The Tuskegee Tigerettes react to an attack on the volleyball by Concordia College on the road in Selma, Ala. on Tuesday night. Tarsha Askew's team won just their third five-set match of the season, while extending their current win streak to three matches.
Box Score
Over the past two weeks, the Tuskegee Tigerettes have built up an impressive three-match winning streak to increase their overall record to 9-6 (8-6 in SIAC play) in the 2013 volleyball season.  Last night, the volleyball traveled to Selma to pick up an impressive five set win over the Lady Hornets of Concordia-Selma College (16-7 overall after the match).  One week prior, the TU Women were in Birmingham, Ala. where they completed a home-and-home sweep of the Lady Bears to pick up their second road victory of the season (not counting neutral site matches).

Box scores and recaps for each of the matches (beginning with last night's duel) are listed below.

Tuskegee University - 3 17 25 25 14 15
Concordia College (Selma) - 2 25 10 14 25 8

Box Score
Even though the Lady Hornets were able to take the initial set, Tuskegee woke up by outscoring the home team 50-24 over the next two sets.  Concordia rallied by flipping the results of the third set around in the fourth set, but Tuskegee just overpowered the opponents in the final set.  This was just the third five-set match of the season for Tuskegee, improving their overall record to 2-1 in matches that go the distance in 2013.

Lania Spencer had a ridiculous total of 40 assists in the losing cause, with only three other assists all match coming from other Concordia players.  Anisha Spencer had 23 digs, but the Lady Hornets failed to produce an attack percentage of above .077 in each of the three sets that they lost.  Ashley McGhee had a team-high ten kills.

The Tigerettes countered with Pamela Allen leading the way with a match-high 13 kills, and with five total Tuskegee players earning at least six digs on the night.  Tanesha Foster led the way in this particular stat, finishing the road trip with a team-high 13 digs.  Kristal Woodard also had a couple of services aces.  After finishing with a negative attack percentage in the opening set, the visiting team didn't finish with an attack set below .227 for the rest of the match.

Tuskegee University - 3 25 21 25 25
Miles College - 1 21 25 10 20

Box Score
One week prior to their match against Concordia, Tuskegee played in just their second road match of the season (out of matches that did not involve neutral sites) in Birmingham against Miles.  This was a rematch of Tuskegee's 3-0 victory over the Lady Bears in their final match during the month of September.  The Tigerettes could have conceivably swept the match, but dropped a competitive second set before handling business the rest of the way in the sixty-minute time frame.

Kiana Barnes finished with 15 assists for Miles, while Reaucheandr Matthews had a team-high five kills for the Lady Bears.  But, Tuskegee countered with 11 kills by Pamela Allen (a match-high) and another match-high with 18 assists from Ashley Mason.  Amber East also chipped in a dozen assists on her own.  Rachel Brownlee and Mason combined for a total of seven service aces.

There are just three matches left in the regular season before the SIAC Tournament takes place Albany State University toward the end of November.  The next match takes place against Stillman College Wednesday night inside the Daniel 'Chappie' James Center.  First serve is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.  Senior Night will take place two weeks later, as Concordia returns to wrap up the home-and-home series for 2013 on Nov. 6th.
