PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -- Tuskegee won the 2026 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship presented by Toyota Saturday afternoon, dispatching No. 1 seed and recent nemesis Spring Hill 4-2 at the Peachtree Tennis Center.
The Golden Tigers (12-14) advanced to the championship match after easily dispatching of Benedict 4-0 on Friday. But after dropping three lopsided contests this season in four tries and also losing the the Badgers (15-11) in two of the previous three championship rounds, the Golden Tigers were determined to topple the three-time defending SIAC champs.
The run to the title did not get off to a good start. The Golden Tigers lost the doubles point as the teams of
Tyler Ladge and
Thompson Thomu (6-2) and
Shane Tapera and
Emmanuel Wettey (7-5) could not deliver. But with the season on the line, Tuskegee found a way to come through in singles competition to bring home the championship.
Thomu came from a set down at No. 1 singles to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Filipe Grebenstov and Tapera won in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at No. 2 singles over Tom Gutermann. Spring Hill kept the contest close by getting a win at No. 4 singles, with Luke Bedwell taking down
Ty'lon Miller 6-0, 6-2.
Â
Still, Tuskegee was able to take down Spring Hill with strong efforts in the remaining scoring matches. At No. 5 singles,
Miles Wilson won in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) over Cristobol Rios before Wettey helped deliver the decisive points with a straight set win (6-2, 6-3) win at No. 6 over Will Huckell to round out the scoring effort.
The championship was Tuskegee's first since 2006, when they completed a SIAC three-peat. Now, the Golden Tigers turn their attention to the NCAA South Region tournament as they have earned an automatic bid into the Division II postseason.
