COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Tuskegee softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests on Saturday, falling 10-4 to Auburn Montgomery in the early game before a 2-0 loss to Wingate later in the day.
AUM 10, Tuskegee 4
Tuskegee showed early fight against Auburn Montgomery, answering a two-run first inning by the Warhawks with a run of its own in the bottom half. Tamiya Martin sparked the response with a single and later scored on an RBI groundout by Kenya Tatum to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Auburn Montgomery extended its lead in the middle innings, capitalizing on extra-base hits and defensive miscues to push across runs in the third and fourth. The Warhawks opened the game up in the fourth inning, plating four runs to take a 7-1 advantage.
Tuskegee responded in the bottom of the fourth with its most productive frame of the game. Ava Mearideth launched a solo home run to left field to get the Tigers going, followed by continued pressure on the basepaths.
Kaitlyn Fletcher walked and later scored on a throwing error, and Shanna McNair doubled down the left-field line to drive in another run as Tuskegee trimmed the deficit to 7-4.
Auburn Montgomery added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win. Monica Rose went the distance in the circle for Tuskegee, striking out five while allowing 10 runs, four of which were earned. McNair and Martin each recorded hits for the Tigers, while Mearideth finished with a home run and RBI.
Wingate 2, Tuskegee 0
In the nightcap, pitching dominated early as both teams were held scoreless through three innings. Tuskegee generated opportunities but was unable to capitalize, stranding runners in scoring position in both the second and fourth innings.
Wingate broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring both of its runs on a two-out, two-RBI double to center field. That proved to be all the offense the Bulldogs would need.
Tuskegee threatened late, collecting four hits in the game, but Wingate pitcher Lily Huneycutt worked out of trouble throughout the contest and finished with nine strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.
Brianna Lachermeier took the loss for the Tigers after a strong effort in the circle, allowing just two runs on five hits over six innings. Martin, Fletcher, Meardith, and Tatum each recorded a hit for Tuskegee.
