TUSKEGEE, Ala. — Tuskegee University Athletics proudly announces the hiring of James Harris, an Olympian and three-time World Champion, as the new assistant coach for the Golden Tigers' track & field and cross country programs.
Harris brings more than a decade of elite international competition and coaching experience to Tuskegee, combining a proven record of developing record-setting athletes with a passion for mentorship and program-building that will elevate the university's storied tradition of excellence.
Harris joins Tuskegee after serving as the head track & field and cross country coach at Miles College from 2022 to 2024, where he led program development and prepared athletes to compete at a championship level.
Prior to his time at Miles, Harris coached at Sandy Creek High School in Georgia from 2019 to 2022 and at Troup County High School from 2017 to 2021, specializing in sprints, jumps, hurdles, and relays while helping produce numerous standout performers.
In addition to his coaching roles, Harris has founded two sports performance development businesses focused on performance coaching, athlete mentorship, and community outreach, further demonstrating his commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the track.
As an athlete, Harris has earned national recognition with a decorated career highlighted by winning the 2009 USA Track & Field 400-meter national championship and capturing three gold medals at the 2010 AAU Junior Olympics in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and high jump. Â
A standout at Lanett High School, Harris dominated the Alabama track scene by earning multiple state championships, including titles in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and high jump while also finishing as a runner-up in the long jump.Â
