JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Golden Tiger women's basketball team faced a tough road challenge at Edward Waters on Monday afternoon, falling 50-43 in their SIAC road battle.
The loss drops Tuskegee's overall record to 5-8 and their SIAC mark to 2-4.
The Golden Tigers got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind early as Edward Waters capitalized on defensive pressure and strong rebounding.
Tuskegee managed just eight points in the opening quarter, while Edward Waters put up 14, taking an early lead.
Despite the slow start, Tuskegee tightened up defensively in the second quarter, but still struggled to find consistent offensive flow, trailing 26-18 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Tuskegee was able to battle back, cutting into the deficit with a few key shots. However, they could not fully close the gap as Edward Waters kept the pressure on both ends of the court.
By the fourth quarter, Tuskegee was down by as many as 11 points and despite several attempts to rally, they fell short, eventually losing by a 50-43 final score.
Tuskegee struggled with their shooting throughout the game, making only 18-for- 57 attempts for a 31.6 percent shooting clip. They were 1-for-16 from beyond the arc (6.3 percent), while Edward Waters shot 37.8 percent, including 4-for-9 from three-point range (44.4 percent).
The Golden Tigers did well at the free-throw line, hitting 6-for-7 (85.7 percent), but could not convert enough from the field to keep up with the Tigers of Edward Waters.
Individually for Tuskegee,
Hilani Cantone led the team in scoring with 11 points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Center
Jasmine Manuel grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and added five points, while
Cynaye Bobbitt came off the bench to score nine points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
On the defensive end, Tuskegee struggled to contain Edward Waters' Imani Harris, who posted a strong game-high 13 points along with 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of play.
The Golden Tigers managed to stay in the game through strong defensive rebounding and by forcing 18 turnovers from the Tigers. However, their inability to convert fast breaks and capitalize on turnovers hindered their comeback efforts.
