TUSKEGEE, Ala. __ A trio of double figure scorers helped lead Tuskegee to a win over Kentucky State, 62-47, at the Daniel "Chappie" James Center on Monday afternoon, extending their winning streak to four games and improving their record to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the SIAC.
The Golden Tigers showcased their strength in both halves of the game, with notable individual performances driving the team to victory, including Hilani Cantone with 16 points, followed by Brittney Bolin and Jasmine Manuel with 11.
In the first quarter, Tuskegee established a solid lead, outscoring Kentucky State 15-7. They dominated on defense, forcing Kentucky State into several turnovers and converting them into points.
Bolin and Manuel led the Golden Tigers in the opening quarter, scoring 13 of the 15 total points. Despite Kentucky State's best efforts to counter, Tuskegee maintained control.
The second quarter was a battle, with Kentucky State showing resilience and closing the gap.
The Golden Tigers' offense was not as sharp, and Kentucky State capitalized on a few key possessions to reduce the lead to just one point at halftime, with the score standing at 28-27 in favor of Tuskegee.
During this period, Hilani Cantone stepped up, scoring four points in the frame to keep the game within reach.
Coming out of the locker room, Tuskegee exploded in the third quarter, outscoring Kentucky State 21-5.
The Golden Tigers turned up their defense, limiting Kentucky State to just five points in the period. Cantone continued her impressive performance, scoring 10 points in the third, sparking the run to break the game open.
The Golden Tigers also dominated the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds in the quarter. This strong performance allowed Tuskegee to extend their lead to 48-33 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Kentucky State made a brief attempt to close the gap, but Tuskegee's defense and free-throw shooting kept the game under control.
Cantone and Holmes both contributed to the scoring efforts, with Cantone scoring key free throws and Holmes adding four points in the final quarter to seal the victory.
Tuskegee finished the game with a 62-47 win, demonstrating their ability to execute offensively and defensively.
This victory was a significant one for the Golden Tigers, as they continued to build momentum in the conference.
With balanced scoring, strong defense, and critical contributions from multiple players, Tuskegee showed that they are a team to be reckoned with as they progress through the remainder of the SIAC season.
