MOBILE, Ala. __ Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim tallied a team-high 17 points to lead Tuskegee's women's basketball team (11-6, 8-5 SIAC) in a 64-55 road victory over Spring Hill (4-13, 4-9 SIAC) on Wednesday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Golden Tigers.
The senior guard shot 5-for-10 from the field, 6-for-8 from the free throw line and made her only three-point attempt in the win. She also had four rebounds and three steals.
Alana Roberts also finished in double figures, scoring a career-high ten points along with four rebounds and a steal.
Brittney Bolin and
Jasmine Manuel both finished with eight points, while Manuel grabbed nine rebounds.
Spring Hill was led by 14 points each from Marta Duda and Yolanda Nelson. Duda finished with a double-double, grabbing 14 rebounds, while Nelson finished with nine rebounds and three assists for the Badgers. Kellyn Hunter also added 12 points and three rebounds in the loss.
The opening quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as the largest lead was just three points on two occasions by Spring Hill. Both teams shot over 40 percent from the field, while Tuskegee made the only three and Spring Hill went 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Abdur-Rahim led the Golden Tigers in the period with nine of her 17 total points, as the teams saw the score tied four times and the lead changed hands seven times. The score remained tight throughout the second, before Spring Hill gained a two-possession lead at 27-22, however Tuskegee responded to score the final six points of the quarter and trailed just 27-26 at the half.
The Golden Tigers took control in the third, using a 6-0 run to start the period to lead 32-27 at the 7:30 mark. The Badgers worked their way back in the game, cutting the lead to 34-32 shortly after, yet TU finished the quarter on a 13-3 run to go up 47-35 heading into the final quarter.
The 21-8 quarter for Tuskegee was the crucial stretch in the win, as the Golden Tigers held on in the fourth for the 64-55 win on the road. TU shot 38.3 percent from the field (23-for-60), 73.9 percent from the line (17-for-23), and just 9.1 percent from three-point range (1-for-11). The team totaled 46 rebounds, 11 assists, and nine steals.
Spring Hill shot 27.9 percent from the field (17-for-61), 14.3 percent from three-point range (2-for-14) and 65.5 percent from the free throw line (19-for-29). The Badgers recorded 45 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
