Abdur-Rahim Comes Up Clutch to Close Out LeMoyne-Owen on the Road

MEMPHIS, Tenn. __ Senior Sumiayah Abdur-Rahim scored a game-high 18 points, followed by 12 from Jasmine Manuel in Tuskegee's 55-53 come-from-behind win over LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday afternoon inside Bruce-Johnson Hall.
 
LeMoyne-Owen (7-7, 5-5 SIAC) opened the scoring 30 seconds into the contest on a score inside after a TU miss on the opening possession. The Golden Tigers (10-4, 7-3 SIAC) would get on the board on the next trip down on a second chance basket from Abdur-Rahim, however the Magicians used several spurts to take the lead at 11-4 with just under four minutes remaining in the quarter.

The Magicians also finished the period strong, entering the second up double figures for the first time at 20-10 after closing the first outscoring the Golden Tigers 9-6. The momentum remained on the home team's side in the second quarter, as LeMoyne-Owen held TU to just 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) shooting from the field and scored six of their 11 total points off turnovers.

After the Magicians stretched their lead to as many as 16 early out of the half, Tuskegee turned the game around in the third, going on an 18-1 run in the period including scoring 13 straight. Abdur-Rahim and Trinity Layton combined for 14 points in the quarter, leading TU to tie the game at 42-42 entering the fourth, outscoring the home team 21-8 over the ten-minute span.
 
The fourth was a tight quarter, as Tuskegee went up four at the eight-minute mark after a fast break score before LeMoyne-Owen tied the game at 46-46 with 6:14 remaining.The game went back-and-forth over the final minutes, seeing two more ties and neither team go up more than three points in the remaining time.
 
Trailing 53-52 with a minute to go, Abdur-Rahim sank a jumper after an offensive rebound from Manuel to take the final lead of the contest, followed by a free throw to clinch the game from Arielle McElroy for the 55-53 win.
 
Following the double figure scorers were Brittney Bolin, Diara Diagne, and Layton with six points each, while Alana Roberts pulled down a career-high ten rebounds, including seven offensive.
 
As a team, the Golden Tigers finished the game shooting just 31.3 percent (20-for-64) from the field, 73.7 percent (14-for-19) from the free throw line and made just one three-pointer on the day. They also outscored LeMoyne-Owen in bench points (26-18), points in the paint (24-16), points off turnovers (19-14), second chance points (12-5), and fast break points (9-3) in the win.
