LIVINGSTON, Ala. –The Tuskegee University volleyball team fell short in its season opener at West Alabama suffering a 3-0 sweep inside Pruitt Hall Saturday afternoon. The match served as the regular season opener for both squads.
A pair of Freshman led the way for the Golden Tigers in
Syncere Ellis who totaled four kills, seven digs and one ace while
Santana Lewis chipped in 13 assists and four digs of her own. Senior
Cyrani Butler paced the team with eight assists of her own
UWA (25-9, 25-8, 25-9) used an overwhelming attack that buzzed to the tune of a team .371 percentage. Senior middle blocker
Jaime Lancellot led the attack with 10 kills while newcomers
Jessica Akiona and
Madison Cooler each had six kills. Returning GSC Freshman of the Year
Kassie Till turned in 21 assists to keep the offense moving.
Lancellot and Cooler formed a formidable front line as they finished with six and five blocks respectively. Akiona led in digs with 12 while Till finished just outside of double digits with nine digs.
During the day, UWA hosted Mississippi University for Women and Birmingham Southern University as part of a day long round-robin exhibition.
The Golden Tigers will come closer to home and complete in the annual Warhawk Invitational hosted by Auburn-Montgomery in Montgomery (AUM) August 31 in a two-day tournament.
