The Tuskegee University softball team secured its first win in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Softball Tournament since 2016 with a 3-1 victory of 2W Claflin Thursday afternoon in Albany, (Ga.) The win from Gordon Sports Park marked TU's first victory in the conference tournament since its league championship victory over Miles College two seasons ago.
In the top of the 11th inning with the game tied at 1-1,
Sierra Smith singled to second base, which created a fielding error by Claflin's Jada Ames that allowed
Sommer Fitzpatrick and
Alexandria Mason to score, giving the Golden Tigers its biggest lead at 3-1.
Chelsea Mowery picked up the victroy for TU pitching the entire 11 innings. She struck out five batters on 11 hits while allowing only one run to score.
Smith finished the afternoon going 3-of-6 and an RBI while
Shambrinetta Adams and
Cecelia Tennessee each notched one hit apiece.
The Golden Tigers scored first in the top of the ninth inning when
Jasmyne Lawrence reached on a throwing error by the pitcher; allowing Mason to score an unearned run.
