TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University volleyball team, coming off of two victories at the SIAC West Cluster, will travel to Cleveland (Tenn.) for a non-conference match with Lee University on Tuesday night.
Tuskegee (2-7, 2-2 SIAC) defeated Central State and Lane to open the Cluster this past weekend at Kentucky State, however, they will take on a Lee team that has played only four matches this season.
"I am really excited about the match," Tuskegee head coach
Melissa Robinson said. "It will be very competitive, and speaks to our schedule as to how it will prepare us for the conference."
Jessica Johnson leads a trio of freshman with 69 kills on 195 attempts, while hitting .092 for the season. Johnson is averaging 2.30 kills per set to pace the Lady Golden Tigers. Meanwhile, fellow freshmen
Taliyana Bryant (68 kills) and
Shakayia Wilson (56 kills) are among the leaders on the team and in the conference.
"I think the freshmen did very well this past weekend," Robinson said. "I am looking forward to their growth and mature the remainder of the season with all of the conference matches we have coming up.
"I am also excited about Donovan (Wingfield) too, I think she has stepped out to be a leader on offense. I am excited to see what she can bring to the team for the rest of the season."
Wingfield has come on as of late for Tuskegee, averaging 1.61 kills per set so far through nine matches. She has recorded 50 total kills on 143 attempts, while hitting .126 on the year.
Sophomore
Janae Graham, who moved from defensive specialist to setter at the beginning of the season, continues to lead the team in assists. The sophomore 243 total assists, averaging 7.84 assists per set. She has recorded 11 service aces, a category she led the nation in last season. Fellow sophomore
Zahria Radford leads Tuskegee defensively with 137 digs.
"Janae has stepped completely out of her comfort zone," Robinson said. "She is playing extremely well for playing out of her position. Zahria is definitely holding down our defense so far this season, and hopefully can keep that up."
The match will begin at 7 pm (est) at Paul Dana Walker Arena. Live stats and video will be provided by Lee University athletics.
