Tuskegee drops five-set heartbreaker

Tuskegee battles back from two-set deficit on Saturday

FRANKFORT, Ky. | After falling behind two sets in the final match of the SIAC West Cluster, the Tuskegee University volleyball team battled back to force a fifth set before falling to LeMoyne-Owen 3-2 (25-19,26-24,20-25,11-25,15-12) on Saturday morning.
 
Taliyana Bryant paced three players in double-digit kills, posting a career-high 14 in the loss. She finished the day hitting .194 on 36 total attempts; while Donovan Wingfield and Shakayia Wilson posted 12 kills each in the loss.
 
Janae Graham finished with a career-high 44 assists (on 51 kills), while Zahria Radford finished with 36 digs and Avery Brown 11 in the loss. Graham continues to add to her career total of service aces, posting a pair on Saturday.
 
Tuskegee (2-7, 2-2 SIAC) fell behind early after dropping the first two sets, before battling back in sets three and four to tie the match at 2-all.
 
The Lady Golden Tigers were in trouble in the third set and looking at a sweep at the hands of LeMoyne-Owen as they battled back to tie the set at 20-all on a service error by LeMoyne-Owen. Tuskegee was able to grab the lead and finish the set on a 6-0 run when Jacqueline Wilson connected on a kill for the 21-20 lead.  After another Wilson kill gave Tuskegee a 22-20 lead in the third set, before using a pair of LeMoyne-Owen errors for the set victory.
 
Tuskegee used a 7-1 run to start the fourth set to run away with the set to tie the match at two sets apiece. The lead grew to as many as 14 on three separate occasions through the set before the Lady Golden Tigers put the set away.
 
In the fifth and deciding set, the two teams traded points until LeMoyne-Owen grabbed a 7-6 lead that ignited a four-point swing and allowed the Magicians to grab a 10-6 lead. Tuskegee battled back to within 10-9 on a kill from Kiara Hooks and a service ace by Brown, before LeMoyne-Owen was able to pull away to close out the set.
 
Tuskegee hits road Tuesday evening to face Lee University in Cleveland (Tenn.) in their next match.
