Lady Golden Tigers sweep Lane Saturday afternoon

Tuskegee has won 7 of 10 conference games in the last month

JACKSON, Tenn. | The Tuskegee University softball team got back on track, sweeping Lane College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon, winning game one 11-4 and game two 4-2.
 
Tuskegee (12-27, 10-4 SIAC) pounded out 11 hits in the opener, and scored four runs in the first inning to run away from the Lady Dragons.
 
Kayla Finch led the attack in the opener, going 4-for-4 at the player with three runs scored and three runs batted in, including her fourth homerun of the season and a double. Sharde Thomas continued her impressive hitting for the season, going 3-for-4 at the plate in the opener with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
 
Kenyah Smith and Jamaica Williams each collected a pair of hits, with Williams connecting on her fifth homerun of the season and driving in four runs. Jasmine Howard added a pair of hits, including a double for Tuskegee.
 
Finch (5-9) picked up the win with a complete game effort, allowing four runs off of seven hits. She also recorded five strikeouts.
 
The Lady Golden Tigers scored early in the contest, using a three-run homerun by Williams and an RBI groundout by Lara Miller for the early 4-0 lead. They scored a single run in the third on an RBI single by Roneshia Rudolph, and two more in the fourth on RBI hits by Williams and Finch. The final blow for Tuskegee came in the sixth and seventh, when they scored two runs in each of the innings.
 
In the nightcap, Toni Beth Garner (3-7) allowed just two runs off of seven hits to pick up a complete game 4-2 victory over the Lady Dragons.
 
Lane did not score until the sixth, when they added both of their runs in the frame. Meanwhile, Tuskegee scored in the first, and three more in fourth inning to seal the victory. Cari Driver started things for Tuskegee with a two-out single, before Williams and Finch singled; with Driver scoring on the Finch single. Kenyah Smith drove in Williams, while Rudolph doubled to score Finch for the final run of the game for Tuskegee.
 
Williams and Driver each collected a pair of hits for Tuskegee, with Williams finishing the day with four hits in the doubleheader.
 
The two teams conclude the doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 pm in Jackson (Tenn.).
