Must win series for Tuskegee against Paine on Senior Weekend

Golden Tigers must win series and get some help to get into SIAC Championships

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University baseball team remains tied for fourth in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season, needing to win a pair of games and get some help to earn a spot in the Baseball Championships next week.

Tuskegee (10-25, 6-11 SIAC) takes on Paine College (24-17, 11-6 SIAC) this weekend in a three-game series at Paterson Field, beginning with a single game on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 4 pm. The Golden Tigers will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 noon, honoring the six seniors on this year's team.

Tuskegee and LeMoyne-Owen split their doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, before rain halted the final game of the series in the third inning. The Golden Tigers need to win a pair of games from Paine this weekend and get some help from Clark Atlanta to get into the tournament. If the Golden Tigers win the series, and Clark Atlanta sweeps LeMoyne-Owen then Tuskegee will earn a spot.

If the teams are within a game of each other, or remain tied, then the conference office will have to decide whether to resume the game as is from Wednesday or use a tiebreaker to determine who is in the tournament – either Tuskegee or LeMoyne-Owen.

Another scenario that could unfold this weekend that could affect the standings is that Tuskegee wins a pair of games from Paine and Kentucky State is swept by Claflin, then the Golden Tigers would be in by virtue of jumping to the third seed for the tournament.

The seedings for the SIAC Baseball Championships is still a long way from finished heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

The Golden Tigers have a pair of players hitting over .300 this season in freshman Matthew Reed at .321 (2 HR, 15 RBI) and junior Ricky Green at .319 (1 HR and 11 RBI). Ryan Green is hitting .294 (2-for-4 SB) and Alexander Henderson is hitting .290 (9 RBI) this season for Tuskegee.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Trey Nelson (3-3, 5.40 ERA) leads the Golden Tigers with 50.0 innings pitched and will get the ball this weekend. He will be joined in the rotation by Jordyn Thomas (2-2, 6.11 ERA) looking to win a pair of games.
