TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University baseball program returns to the diamond Wednesday after a week off, facing the University of Montevallo on the road in a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm.
Tuskegee (2-9) will play their third different mid-week opponent this season, as they have faced Selma and Columbus State thus far. The Golden Tigers and Montevallo will meet just three days before Tuskegee opens conference play by hosting Kentucky State on Saturday.
The Golden Tigers are led by several freshmen and newcomers at the plate through the first 11 games of the season. Freshman
Elgin Woodside, a former SIAC Player of the Week, is the team's leading hitter at .333 with three doubles, two homeruns and 10 runs batted in this season. Fellow freshman
Matthew Reed, the current SIAC Player of the Week, is hitting .273 with a double, homerun and three runs batted in.
Newcomers
Ricky Green (.304) and
Joseph Mauldin (.300) are also near the top in batting average for the Golden Tigers this season, while SIAC Preseason selection
Alexander Henderson is hitting .273 with a double.
On the mound, Green leads the team in earned run average at 1.93 in 4.2 innings pitched (three appearances). He has allowed just two runs off of six hits.
Trey Nelson leads the team in innings pitched at 17.1, while Mauldin has struck out 16 in just 16 innings of work.
