TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Tuskegee University will begin celebrating Homecoming Week this week, culminating with the football contest against Kentucky State University on Saturday afternoon. However, the Tuskegee University volleyball team will kick off the festivities on Monday night.
Tuskegee (9-14, 9-6 SIAC) currently sits third in the SIAC West Division, behind Spring Hill and Kentucky State. They will host Miles College (9-16, 6-10 SIAC) on Monday night inside Chappie James Arena.
The match begins at 6 pm, and admission is free to all volleyball matches, with everyone asked to wear black for "Black Out Night."
Tuskegee and Miles have not met this season, although they have been in the same arena three different times. The meeting on Monday night will be the first of two meetings between the two rivals, as Tuskegee will travel to Fairfield (Ala.) later this season.
The Lady Golden Tigers are led by a trio of freshmen who have all been rewarded by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) this season with weekly awards.
Jessica Johnson, the reigning SIAC Newcomer of the Week, leads all Lady Golden Tigers with 198 kills while hitting .163 this season. She is currently averaging 2.51 kills per set.
Taliyana Bryant is second on the team in kills with 181 kills while hitting .182, and averaging 2.23 kills per set. Meanwhile,
Shakayia Wilson is third on the team in kills 154, while hitting .188.
Sophomore
Donovan Wingfield is the only other player in triple digits in kills for Tuskegee this season, with 132 kills.
Sophomore
Janae Graham, who transitioned from a defensive specialist to setter this season for Tuskegee, leads the team and the conference with 678 assists. She is averaging 8.37 assists per set, and has assisted on all but 129 kills this season for Tuskegee. The sophomore has added 23 service aces and 141 digs – second on the team.
Meanwhile, sophomore
Zahria Radford leads Tuskegee and is among the conference leaders in digs this season with 369. She is averaging 4.56 digs per set, and has added 38 assists and 24 service aces this season.
The match will be carried on the Tuskegee Digital Network, with the pre-match show beginning at 5:45 pm.
