WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. | Tuskegee University first-year head coach
Melissa Robinson and the Tigerettes bounced back from their opening loss on Friday to split their matches on Saturday with West Virginia Wesleyan and Shepherd, giving Robinson her first career victory.
Tuskegee (1-2) opened the day with a five-set victory over West Virginia Wesleyan 3-2 (13-27,12-25,25-16,25-23,15-13), giving the Tigerettes their first victory of the season.
After falling in the first two sets of the match, Tuskegee used the intermission to regroup and came out to win the next three, including the final two sets by narrow margins. The Tigerettes jumped to a big lead in the fourth set, leading 24-17 late before West Virginia Wesleyan went on a 6-0 run. The Tigerettes were able to put the match away with a kill from
Jamiah Breda-Nixon.
In the final set, the Tigerettes were able to come from behind after trailing 13-11 late in the set. They tied the match on a kill from
Jacqueline Wilson, before claiming the match on a pair of serves from
Zahria Radford creating errors from West Virginia Wesleyan.
"This weekend was a good opening weekend for us," Robinson said. "We were able to work out a few kinks and get a little more comfortable working together as a team. This weekend allows us to go back to the drawing board and get ready for next weekend when we open up conference play."
Tuskegee was led by Breda-Nixon with 10 kills on 25 total attacks, finishing the day with a hitting percentage of .160. Wilson added eight kills, while
Pamela Allen added five kills.
Morgan Scrivens added 21 assists in the victory for Tuskegee.
