MOBILE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University volleyball team bounced back from an opening match loss by defeating Lane College 3-0 (25-4,25-9,25-7) in their second match of the SIAC West Cluster hosted by Spring Hill College.
Tuskegee (11-10, 9-7 SIAC) was led by
Jamiah Breda-Nixon with 11 kills while hitting .529, and
Pamela Allen with 11 kills while hitting .500.
Jacqueline Wilson added eight kills.
Morgan Scrivens led the way with a match-high 19 kills in the victory for the Tigerettes, who hit .424 in the match.
The Tigerettes held Lane (0-23, 0-16 SIAC) to just three kills and -.240 hitting percentage for the match.
The Tigerettes bounced back from the opening match loss by scoring the first three points of the opening set against Lane, before pushing the lead to 7-1. Following a point by Lane, the Tigerettes went on a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 20-2 over their opponents.
During the opening set run, Tuskegee used four kills from
Pamela Allen, a pair of kills from
Jamiah Breda-Nixon, three service aces from Naliah Pruitt and a kill from
Morgan Scrivens to extend their lead. They were able to put the opening set away with a mini 3-0 run.
After falling behind in the second set after just three points, the Tigerettes went on a 6-1 run to regain the lead and take a 7-3 early advantage. During that mini-run, Tuskegee used four kills from Breda-Nixon and a pair from Allen to take the lead they would never relinquish. The Tigerettes forced Lane into a timeout on a 4-0 run, using a pair of kills from Breda-Nixon to take an 11-4 lead. From there, Tuskegee was able to maintain control and went on to close out the second set on a 13-4 run.
The third set saw three runs of five or more consecutive points for Tuskegee which allowed them to push through for the straight-set victory. The highlight of the runs came in the first (a 5-0 run to open the match) when
Janae Graham recorded three service aces.
Tuskegee returns to action at 8:30 am Saturday against Central State, and close out the SIAC West Cluster against LeMoyne-Owen at 11:30 am on the campus of Spring Hill College.
