WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- Three big conference tests for the Golden Tigers turned into two victories at the SIAC West Crossover at Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium on the campus of Central State on Friday and Saturday. Tuskegee (14-9, 8-3 SIAC) earned a four-set win over Benedict (16-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-11) before splitting two five-set matches. A loss to Edward Waters (25-14, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, 14-16) ended a seven-match win streak before rebounding to take down Savannah State (25-13, 24-26, 25-15, 18-25, 15-13).
Carmyn Lawson had 40 kills, 31 digs and 10 blocks (two solo), and
Najwa Williams added 34 kills and 14 digs, while
Jordyn Jones (16 kills, 16 blocks) and
Helena Pommeret (16 kills,15 blocks) played big at the net in the three matches.
Sakiah Logan had a team high 45 digs and
Ta'Mya Hicks had 64 assists and 20 digs.
In the win over Benedict, Tuskegee dropped the first set before hitting .360 over the final three frames to take the match. Lawson had 12 kills, five aces and six digs,
Tamara Cooper hit .444 with 11 kills and Pommeret had three kills and six blocks (one solo) to pace the Golden Tigers. In the loss to Edward Waters, Tuskegee dropped the first two sets but was able to battle back for a deciding fifth set. The Golden Tigers served for the match up 14-13 but EWU got the side out and finished the match with two service aces to get the victory. Williams tied her season-high with 18 kills and Hicks posted a double-double (19 assists, 10 digs).
In the win over Savannah State, Tuskegee alternated sets with the Tigers until Lawson closed it out with a kill on the third match point. The Golden Tigers hit .378 in the sets it won and -.002 in the sets it dropped. Lawson had 19 kills, 12 digs and three blocks, Pommeret added 10 kills and three blocks, Hicks finished with 25 assists, Jones had eight blocks (two solo) and five kills, and Logan closed with a team-high 15 digs for Tuskegee, which hosts Spring Hill on Thursday. First serve is set for 5 p.m.Â
