Tuskegee University Men’s Basketball Welcomes Back Ray Johnson as Assistant Coach

TUSKEGEE, Ala. — Tuskegee University Athletics announced today the addition of Ray Johnson as the new assistant coach for the Golden Tigers men's basketball program.

Johnson brings a wealth of coaching, player development, and leadership experience to the program, returning to Tuskegee after previously serving as an assistant coach with the Golden Tigers.

Johnson rejoins Tuskegee after an extensive coaching career that includes positions at Columbus State University, Hawaii Pacific University, and Indiana University Southeast, where he helped guide the Grenadiers to a 24-9 record, a River States Conference runner-up finish, and a NAIA Sweet 16 appearance during the 2017-18 season.

He also spent four years as Associate Head Coach for the All-Army Men's Basketball Team at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, leading military athletes through combines, mini-camps, and international tournaments in Guam, Korea, and Japan, where his teams captured multiple Pacific Wide Military Tournament titles.

In his first stint with Tuskegee, the Golden Tigers finished 13-15 overall but a strong 12-8 record in the SIAC and 7-4 home record at the "Daniel" Chappie James Center. Tuskegee advanced to the opening round of the SIAC Basketball Championships before falling to Benedict to conclude their season.

"We are excited to have Coach Johnson join us again," said Tuskegee head coach Benjy Taylor. "He has a wealth of knowledge, and he is going to be a great Head Coach one day.  He understands the mission, and he will help finish the job."

Beyond Tuskegee, Johnson's resume includes coaching stops at Augusta State University, where he helped lead the team to a 24-8 record, a Peach Belt Conference Championship, and an NCAA Division II Southeast Regional semifinal appearance, as well as operational roles with Virginia Commonwealth University, the Louisville Sports Commission, and major events like the ESPN Heisman House and Ironman Series.

A native of Decatur, Georgia, Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in Management from the University of Phoenix and a Master's in Coaching & Sports Administration from Concordia University Irvine.

As a former collegiate player at Southern Mississippi and McCook College (Nebraska), he brings a unique perspective to developing athletes for success at the next level.

With Johnson's return, Tuskegee continues to reinforce its commitment to elevating the men's basketball program heading into the upcoming season.
