TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee baseball was unable to contain a high-powered Edward Waters offense in the final game of their three-game SIAC weekend series, falling 17-2 in seven innings at Washington Field on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Golden Tigers to 11-20 overall and 8-13 in SIAC play, while the visiting Tigers improved to 21-13 on the season and 14-7 in conference action.
Edward Waters jumped out to a fast start, plating five runs in the top of the first inning on just one hit, capitalizing on four walks, a hit batter, and a two-run double to center field from Schoening.
Tuskegee starter
Mikelle Mason struggled with command early, and the visitors continued to apply pressure with aggressive baserunning and disciplined plate appearances.
In the second inning, Edward Waters extended its lead to 6-0 after a fielder's choice off the bat of Smith drove in another run.
The momentum carried into the third, where Edward Waters erupted for seven more runs on four hits. The damage was highlighted by an RBI triple, a two-RBI triple, and an RBI single in the frame.
Following a later double to bring home another run and a groundout that plated two more, giving the visitors a commanding 13-0 lead after three innings.
Tuskegee got on the board in the bottom of the third.
John Saffold, who had a multi-hit day at the plate, sparked the offense with a leadoff single.
Alex Glass later drove in a run with a base hit, putting Tuskegee on the board.
The Golden Tigers would add another run in the fifth but could not mount a comeback against a relentless Edward Waters pitching and defensive effort.
Mason was tagged with the loss for Tuskegee, surrendering six runs in just one inning of work, walking five and allowing one hit.
Ryan Morrow provided four and two-thirds innings in relief, giving up seven hits and eight runs, seven of which were earned.
Saffold led Tuskegee offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Glass, who delivered an RBI, was among four Golden Tigers to register hits in the game.
Tuskegee finished with six hits but left runners stranded in key moments.
The loss closed out the three-game weekend series between the SIAC rivals, with Edward Waters taking the sweep.
