SAVANNAH, Ga. __ Tuskegee women's basketball fell to host school Savannah State in the Quarterfinals of the SIAC Women's Basketball Championship, presented by Cricket on Thursday, 81-68, to conclude the season.
Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim and
Jasmine Manuel led the Golden Tigers with 17 points each, while Abdur-Rahim added three rebounds and two blocks, and Manuel added six rebounds and four assists.
Cynaye Bobbitt and
Brittney Bolin joined in the double figure category with 12 and 11 points respectively.
In the first, Savannah State (20-5, 15-4 SIAC) grabbed a quick 5-0 lead, but a run by Tuskegee (15-10, 11-8 SIAC) made the score 12-10 with 3:37 left in the quarter after a three from Bobbitt. The teams traded buckets over the next few possessions, with TU tying the game at 14-14, but Savannah State scored the last three of the period to hold a 17-14 lead.
Both sides continued to trade blows throughout the second period. After a jumper from Bolin with nearly three minutes in, Tuskegee gained its first lead at 21-19. However, Savannah State closed the half strong in front of its home crowd, holding a 35-31 lead at the break.
The third quarter proved to be the crucial blow, as SSU outscored the Golden Tigers 25-12 in the period. The Tigers shot a game-high 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the field in the quarter, and 75 percent (3-for-4) from three-point range. Savannah State stretched its lead to as many as 18 points, and continued to control the game from there, taking the 81-68 win.
