TUSKEGEE __ Despite leading by as many as four runs, Tuskegee baseball fell to West Alabama late, 5-4, on Wednesday in a midweek non-conference battle held at Washington Field.
Tuskegee lost despite collecting 13 total hits, compared to just five from UWA.
Stephon Wright led TU at the plate on the day, going 3-for-4 with one RBI, while
Julian Grier,
Devon Lee, and
Scott Williams all earned two hits each.
A double from
Harrison Barnes to left field put the Golden Tigers on the board in the bottom of the first inning for the opening score, as Williams was the first runner on either side to cross the plate. Wright singled in the second with two runners on to bring home
Evan Jones for the 2-0 lead.
TU later extended its lead with another two scores in the bottom of the third on three hits, starting with consecutive doubles to open the inning from J Slaughter and Williams, adding the first run. Grier singled later in the inning with one out to drive home the next, going up 4-0 heading into the fourth.
West Alabama got on the board in the top of the fifth behind a trio of hits and one error, as an RBI double to left field and RBI single to center to pull the game to 4-2 heading into the fifth, a score that remained until the top of the eighth when UWA added another run for the 4-3 score.
In the top of the ninth, UWA gained its first lead of the day with two runs in the inning. West Alabama got two runners on base with a pair of walks, before an RBI single and sacrifice fly to take the 5-4 lead. Tuskegee was retired in order in the bottom half of the frame to fall by one score.
Jace Dunsford earned the win for West Alabama, allowing no hits and no runs, while earning one strikeout. Meanwhile,
Rodney Mudd II took the loss for Tuskegee, going eight innings and surrendering five runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out two and walking five.

Tuskegee will return to SIAC action this weekend, as they travel to Jackson, Tennessee for a three-game series against Lane, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the Fesmire Baseball Field.
