Women's Basketball Set to Open Tournament Play Against Central State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Tuskegee University, ranked 24th in the latest NCAA Division II women's basketball poll and the top seed in the TIAA SIAC Women's Basketball Championship presented by Cricket, will take on Central State Wednesday at noon at Savannah State's Tiger Arena.

Central State advanced with a 79-68 victory over Allen Monday afternoon.

The Golden Tigers, 23-3 overall, went 20-0 in league play and are riding a 14-game winning streak. By earning the top seed in the Division, Tuskegee received byes in the initial rounds and has not played since a 68-57 win over Kentucky State on Feb. 20.

Tuskegee swept the season series against Central State, winning 66-56 on the road on Jan. 9, before coming away with an 89-74 victory on Feb. 19 at the Chappie James Center.

Led by SIAC Player of the Year Ashiala Jackson (Merrillville, Ind.) and SIAC Defensive Player of the Year JuToreyia Willis (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Tuskegee is the favorite to take the tournament title. Jackson averaged 15.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. A redshirt senior, Jackson has won back-to-back Player of the Year awards. Meanwhile, Willis averaged 13 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.3 steals per game. A graduate student, Willis has won back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Tuskegee coach Trelanne Powell, the SIAC Coach of the Year, is trying to become the first Tuskegee coach to win the tournament title since Belinda Roby did it in 2008.

Central State is led by first-team All-SIAC forward Kailyn Nash. A 6-0 sophomore from Muskegon, Mich., Nash led the league in scoring (16.4) and blocked shots (2.6), while finishing sixth in rebounding (8.2). She had 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the win over Allen on Monday.
