Tuskegee opens SIAC Crossover with pair of wins

Jasper, Ala. I Tuskegee (5-8, 2-0 SIAC) took the first two games of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Crossover with an 11-10 win over Albany State followed by a 14-2 win over Benedict on neutral site field Memorial Park on Thursday.

In a high scoring affair, Albany State got the first run on the board after a two-out homer in the top of the opening inning.
 
Anaya Carter (Chicago, Ill.) doubled to score Alexis Paredes (Pelham, Ala.) for the first Golden Tiger run, followed by a bases-clearing grand slam from Cecelia Tennessee (Houston, Texas) later in the inning. Meanwhile, Kendra Gibbons (Lineville, Ala.) doubled to bring home Nylah Strange-Lindley (Sulphur Springs, Texas) to give Tuskegee a 6-1 lead after two.
 
Albany State reduced the lead in the third inning with a triple to drive home three runs along with scoring off an error to get within a single score at 6-5.
 
During the next half inning for the Golden Tigers, Tennessee doubled to right field to add another pair of RBIs to give Tuskegee an 8-5 lead, however the Golden Rams responded with a run in the fourth and four in the seventh inning to retake the lead at 10-8.
 
In the bottom half of the final inning, Tuskegee got a runner in scoring position after a walk and pair of stolen bases from Tennessee. After a strikeout, Gibbons drew a two-out walk and was followed by Peredes reaching on an error, resulting in two runs, tying the game 10-10.
 
On the next at-bat, Myracle Hawkins (Morrow, Ga.) recorded the walk off single to center field to score Gibbons, winning the game 11-10.
 
Ayriana Stoneback earned the win on the mound, pitching a complete game and striking out four batters over her seven innings. Mackenzie Chamblee started for Albany State, working 5.2 innings, and allowing 13 hits and eight runs, while Kierra Washington picked up the loss in an inning of work, giving up three runs and a hit.
 
Tuskegee tallied 14 hits in the win, led by Tennessee who earned three hits, along with two runs and six RBIs, followed by Strange-Lindley who all added a pair of hits on the day while eight different Golden Tigers scored in the game.

After Gibbons singled to left field to score Tennessee to get Tuskegee on the board in the top of the first inning, Benedict responded with a pair of scores to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second inning.
 
The Golden Tigers broke the game open in the third, starting with an RBI single from Jada Chadwick (Columbus, Ga.) to score Kayla Wright (Millbrook, Ala.). Peredes drove in Gibbons on the next at-bat, followed by an RBI single from Kaeley Roldan (Wahiawa, Hi.) to go up 4-2.
 
Tuskegee added another score later in the inning off an error, while another costly Benedict error allowed another pair of runs to secure the 7-2 lead after three.
 
The Golden Tigers added three more runs in the fourth on three hits and an error and added
four more in the fifth off seven hits in the inning to take the 14-2 win. They registered a season-high 17 hits in the game, led by Roldan with four hits, two runs and an RBI. Four other Golden Tigers registered at least two hits on the day, while eight scored, including five scoring multiple runs.
 
Stoneback pitched 5.0 innings in the circle for Tuskegee, surrendering just two runs on two hits while striking out five batters. Deyonce Lewis picked up the loss for Benedict, pitching all five innings and giving up 17 hits and 10 earned runs.
