The Tuskegee University football team gave up a pair of big second half scores and Alabama State claimed a 38-31 come from behind win Saturday night in the annual Labor Day Classic in Montgomery, Ala. The victory inside ASU Stadium gave the Hornets back to back wins in the series for the first time since 1994 and 1995.
For the third straight year, TU scored on its opening drive when
Jamarcus Ezell connected with
Peyton Ramzy on a 24-yard touchdown pass. ASU would respond scoring the next two touchdowns, making the score 14-7.
Taurean Taylor tied the game at 14-14 after capping off a seven-play 75-yard touchdown drive on a two-yard TD run. Both teams would exchange scores but, the Hornets missed its PAT. With 1:07 left in the first half, Taylor found the end zone for the second time on a six-yard TD run, making the score 21-20 at halftime.
On the first drive of the second half,
Arnes Huskic extended Skegee's lead to 24-20 with a 29-yard field goal. The Hornets connected on a 43 yarder on the ensuing drive bringing ASU to within one point again, 24-23.
It looked as if the Golden Tigers would break things open with 7:47 left in the third quarter when Devaren Valcin ran back a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown, making the score 31-23 after the PAT.
ASU's Duran Bell broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run to tie the game after converting a 2-point conversion. On the next possession for ASU, KHA'Darris Davis connected with Michael Jefferson on an 82-yard touchdown pass to round out the scoring for a final of 38-31.
Taylor led the Golden Tigers on the ground with 78 yards and a pair of scores. Ahmad Deramus finished the evening going 10-of-21 for 108 yards. Ramzy hauled in six catches for 108 yards and a TD while
Ricky Norris led TU defensively with 9.5 tackles.
Tuskegee travels to Kentucky State next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
