Jamea Lyons surrendered one run on three hits in seven innings of work to power Tuskegee past Clark Atlanta Thursday afternoon in first round action of the SIAC Softball Tournament. The victory marked the second straight year TU advances past day one action of the annual conference championship located in Albany, Ga. at the Gordon Sports Complex.
After giving up a run in the second inning, Lyons went on to hold the Panthers scoreless the rest of the way, with the help of solid fielding defensively from the Golden Tigers, who did not commit a single error.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning,
Kyah Dumas doubled to left center, which drove in
Jayme Marbury and
Myracle Hawkins, giving TU a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Cece Tennessee came through with an RBI single to center field, allowing
Kendra Gibbons to score and provided Skegee with a 3-1 lead. Hawkins would provide the insurance the Golden Tigers needed to pull away in the sixth inning when she singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a throw that also led to
Nina Hylton Scoring, giving TU a commanding 5-1 lead.
Dumas helped round out the scoring when she grounded out, driving in Tennessee and extending the team's lead to 6-1. Dumas finished the afternoon going 2-of-3 with three RBI and a scored. run. Tennessee was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI while Gibbons and Wright also each earned hits.
Last season, the Golden Tigers topped Claflin (now in the CIAA) in the first round of the softball tournament. They will face the winner of Albany State and Kentucky State Friday with a 12:00 p.m. EST first pitch.
