Golden Tigers fall to Montevallo in softball doubleheader

The Tuskegee University softball team struggled at home to the University of Montevallo in a Wednesday doubleheader at the TU softball on the campus of Tuskegee University. The Golden Tigers dropped game one 11-6 and game two 15-0.

In game one, Skegee got off to a slow start and allowed the Falcons to take a 10-1 lead through the first four innings before rallying with a big fourth inning. Destiny Buckhanan's two RBI single to center field started the come from behind effort that scored N'daya Jordan and Kendra Gibbons. Moments later, Kyah Dumas doubled to right center, driving in Buckhanan and CeCe Tennessee, to make the score 10-5.

Sierra Smith brought the game to within one run when she blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning making the score 10-6, however the Falcons added another run to push its lead back to 11-5, rounding out the scoring.

Buckhanan and Dumas both had the best moments at the plate in game one going 2-for-4.
In game two, Montevallo took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning following a RBI single by sophomore Brooke Ingram, a two-run double by junior Haley Barnette and a two-run single by sophomore Carlee Mullinax. Barnette blasted a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to extend the Falcons' lead to 7-0.

The Falcons extended their lead to 12-0 in the top of the third inning when junior Brianna Stellascored on a wild pitch and sophomore Caroline Pope scored on a bases-loaded walk before senior Lady Sarah Federico lined a three-run triple into the gap in right-center field. Junior Mariel Bertossi plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning with her two-run single to left-center field. The Falcons scored their final run on a RBI double down the left-field line by senior Lauren Van Steenwyk in the top of the fifth inning, making the final 15-0.

The Golden Tigers open a three-game set with the LeMoyne Owen College in a Friday doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m. Both teams will close things out with a single game that gets underway at 3 p.m.
