Edward Waters scored a touchdown with 20 seconds left but missed its extra point and Tuskegee escaped with a 27-26 win over Edward Waters College Friday from Jacksonville, Fla. The victory pushed Skegee's win streak to four straight and sets up a pivotal SIAC Western Division clash with Miles College next Saturday.
Arnes Huskic connected on a pair of first quarter field goals to give the Golden Tigers an early 6-0 lead before EWC converted on two of their own to notch things up at 6-6 in the second quarter.
Just before halftime, Ahmad Deramus found
Peyton Ramzy streaking down the sideline for a 31-yard touchdown catch with 14 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The drive occupied 65 yards on seven plays, to put the Golden Tigers ahead 13-6 at the break.
EWC tied the game early in the third quarter with 20 yard touchdown pass, but TU would respond when
Taurean Taylor scampered for 28 yards at the 9:49 mark of the third quarter, giving Skegee a 20-13 lead. On the team's ensuing possession,
Steven Hodges was on the receiving end of Deramus' second touchdown pass of the evening with a 73-yard score to give TU its biggest lead at 27-13.
EWC scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to bring the game to within one point at 27-26. A running into the kicker penalty after the second score gave the Tigers two opportunities to convert the point after touchdown, but Angel Sevier missed both attempts and TU survived.
Defensively,
Chester Hutcherson finished with a career high 18 tackles for Skegee while
Ricky Norris added nine stops. Deramus completed 12-of-22 passes for 197 yards and a pair of scores while
Steven Hodges hauled in four catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.
The Golden Tigers will host rival Miles College next Saturday, Nov. 9 for its annual homecoming game. The winner will clinch the 2019 SIAC West Division. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen on
