The Tuskegee University volleyball team made it 14 out of the last 15 including four in a row Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory (16-25, 28-26, 25-19, 25-19) over Miles College at Knox-Windham Gymnasium in Fairfield, Ala.
Miles ran out to an early lead but TU was able to prevent big points when the opponent needed them the most.
The Lady Bears scored seven straight points early in the first set and never relinquished the lead. They were helped by 13 attack errors by the Golden Tigers, who hit -.250 for the set. Miles opened a 24-21 lead in the defining second set and served for a 2-0 lead. But Tuskegee scored four straight points to force its own set point. Thanks to two Tuskegee errors, Miles again served to take the set but was unable to close the door, Instead, the Golden Tigers scored three straight points to take the set and even the match.
Erin Jackson (match-high 17 kills) and
Crystal Hall (14 kills) paced the Tuskegee attack. Miles received additional contributions from
La'Promise Boone (6 kills, 14 assists, 6 digs),
Tatiyana Thomas (3 kills, 5 blocks - 4 solo) and
D'Nautica Johnson (match-high 20 digs).
In the third set, Tuskegee opened an early eight-point lead and cruised to the win in taking a 2-1 advantage. The final set was tight early but the Golden Tigers scored four straight points to open a 14-9 lead. A kill by
Maiya Northard (11 digs, 2 kills, 2 assists) cut the deficit to 17-14 but the Lady Bears never got any closer.
Tuskegee will play at Oakwood College Oct. 5 in Huntsville. The match is set for 6 p.m.
