The Tuskegee University baseball team came up short in its mid-week contest against Columbus State falling 12-11 Wednesday afternoon at Paterson Field in Montgomery (Ala). The single game was a tuneup before the Golden Tigers start a three home series with Kentucky State this weekend.
It appeared as if it was going to be an easy day for the Cougars after the top of the first inning.Â
Robert Brooks doubled to right-centerfield with the bases loaded to plate the first two runs of the day.Â
Austin Pharr extended the lead to 5-0 with a RBI single andÂ
Garrett Kirkwood capped off the eight-run first with a run-scoring knock of his own.
Â
However, Tuskegee (5-16) didn't roll over. The Golden Tigers got two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third to pull within three.
Â
Drew Webb stopped the run momentarily with a RBI in the fifth, but Tuskegee responded with two of its own in the bottom half and cut CSU's lead to 9-7.
Â
The Cougars found some insurance in the sixth as Pharr singled home two more as part of a three-run inning.
Â
Columbus State took a 12-8 lead into the ninth inning, however TU's
Elgin Woodside launched a three-run home run with one out to make it just a one-run game. A walk put the tying run on base, butÂ
Justin Evans moved to the mound and quickly got the final two outs to keep CSU's 22 game winning streak intact.
Woodside finished the day going 4-of-5 with six RBI while
Keldric Burton was 2-of-5 at the plate.
Joshua Lewis picked of the loss for TU. He allowed nine runs on six hits and struck out five batters.
