The Tuskegee University women's basketball team had very little trouble with Georgia Southwestern State Wednesday night winning a 69-53 non-conference game from Chappie James Arena. The victory improves the team's overall record to (5-1, 1-0).
Alexis Carter paced TU with a season-high 24 point effort. Her 16 rebounds gave her a third straight double-double and fourth overall through only six games. The Atlanta, Ga. native scored 13 of those 24 points in the first half.
India Blakely, the only other Golden Tiger in double figures scored 13 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds.
Skegee outscored the Hurricanes 16-5 in the second period when they ended the half on a 9-0 run, which included baskets from Carter,
Eleana Daniels and
Shelle Daniels.
The Golden Tigers struggled with ball control as GSWS forced 21 turnovers, however defensively, they caused their share of problems only allowing its opponent to shoot 22.7 percent on 5-of-22 shooting from three point range. The biggest point differential came from the points in the paint stat line as TU dominated that category 40-26. Skegee had no issues scoring the ball with a 51.1 field goal shooting percentage. That marked increased to 68 percent in the second half.
Both
Shelle Daniels and
Jade Wilson fell one point and one rebound shy of earning double-doubles. The pair of Indiana natives finished with nine points and nine boards. Kayla Smith and Morgan Towells led the Hurricanes with 12 points apiece.
Tuskegee travels to Paine College this weekend as they dive back into conference play. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. ET
