Alexis Carter scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Tuskegee University women's basketball team fell short in overtime against the University of Montevallo 71-65 in its final game of the GSC/SIAC Challenge. The Golden Tigers open the season at 1-1 after defeating Auburn-Montgomery Friday evening.
TU led by as many as six points in the fourth period (52-46) before the Falcons eventually clawed their way back. After a pair of free throws from
Normesha Pitts with 16 seconds left, TU led 62-59 but Rachel Baker hit a three pointer with eight seconds to go in regulation, forcing overtime for Montevallo (2-0). In OT, Skegee ended up getting outscored 9-3 with Nautika Philpot, a former high school teammate of TU's Pitts scoring five of those points for the Falcons.
Two other players scored in double figures for the Golden Tigers with
Eleana Daniels and Pitts producing 11 points each. Daniels also added five rebounds and five steals. India Blakley scored eight points and handed out seven assists while Shelle Daniles chipped in seven points and six boards.
After only committing seven turnovers one night ago, TU surrendered 23 Saturday night and got outscored from the bench 46-27.
Tuskegee will travel to Carrolton, Ga, next Tuesday to face West Georgia. Tip off is set for 4:30.
