Tuskegee can't overcome hot Spring Hill shooting

MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College (SHC) women's basketball team took their eighth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon with an 87-67 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision over in-state rival the Tuskegee University (TU) Golden Tigers in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
 
The Badgers led the Golden Tigers (4-15, 3-8 SIAC West) by a 39-33 margin at halftime, but exploded on a 25-13 run in the 3rd quarter to build a commanding 64-46 advantage going into the final 10 minutes of play. SHC would hold as much as a 77-52 cushion with 4:12 left on the clock.

Taylor Miller and DonShelle Daniels each scored 13 points for the Golden Tigers as Tuskegee shot 37.9% (25-66) from the field including 38.1% (8-21) from 3-point land. The Golden Tigers made just 52.9% (9-17) of their free throws and lost 19 turnovers to 13 steals by SHC.
 
For the second consecutive game, four Badgers eclipsed the double-digit mark in scoring with sophomore forward Tiffany Valentine dropping in 18 points and 11 rebounds while senior forward Angel Carthen enjoyed a fourth consecutive double-double night with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Elise Reilly poured in 18 points with a 5-of-9 night from 3-point distance and senior guard Jewel Hill added 16 points. Senior point guard Jennifer Clark handed out seven assists and took away two steals.
 
Reilly now stand one 3-point basket away from tying her own SHC season record of 72 set in 2016-17.
 
SHC shot an even 50% (28-56) on the night for the second straight game including 47.1% (8-17) from 3-point distance, but continued to battle turnovers, surrendering 16 fumbles to nine steals by the Golden Tigers. SHC connected on 79.3% (23-29) of their attempts at the free throw line and controlled the rebounding with a 42-36 edge under the boards.
 
Tuskegee remains off until next Saturday when they will travel to Jackson, Tenn. to face Lane Collge. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
