Tigerettes fall to Paine in overtime

Rachel Brownlee leads three players in double figures

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | A pair of late free throws by Paine College was enough for the visitors to hold off the Tuskegee University women's basketball team in a 72-70 setback for the Tigerettes in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action Monday afternoon.
 
Tuskegee (5-8, 1-3 SIAC) was able to force the overtime period, their fourth of the season, with a 14-2 run to start the second half which resulted in the Tigerettes' first lead of the contest at 34-33 with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter. The run continued and reached 16-2 as Tuskegee was able to push their lead to 36-33, before Paine answered with a run of their own to regain the lead 45-44 with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter.
 
The Tigerettes were able to push their lead to 53-45 with 7:38 to play in regulation on a Rachel Brownlee three-pointer, and held the lead until the final minute when Paine tied the game at 62-all with 1:02 to play before both teams went without a field goal until overtime.
 
The game looked out of reach in the first half when Paine (6-8, 3-4 SIAC) was able to push to as much as a 16-point lead with 6:08 to play in the half before Tuskegee went on their third quarter run.
 
Brownlee led three Tuskegee players in double figures with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists; while Taylor Miller added 19 points and seven rebounds. Cheyanne Williams added 11 points and six rebounds, while Teja Finley added six points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Tigerettes shot 32.4 (23-of-71) percent from the floor and 28.6 (6-of-21) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 81.8 (18-of-22) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 19 Paine turnovers.
 
Meanwhile, Janisha Wilkerson led Paine with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Tania Ward added 18 and Simiria Huggins 17 in the victory for the Lions. Paine ended the night shooting 38.4 (28-of-73) percent from the floor and 24 (6-of-25) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 62.5 (10-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 51-48.
 
Tuskegee returns to action Thursday night at home against Spring Hill College, with tip set for 5:30 pm.
