TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Spring Hill College used a pair of players of double figures to pull away from Tuskegee University, 59-49, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action Thursday night at Chappie James Arena.
Rachel Brownlee led Tuskegee (5-9, 1-4 SIAC) with a game-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough as the Spring Hill built a 17-point advantage in the third quarter and were able to withstand a fourth quarter charge by Tuskegee. The Tigerettes cut into the lead, trimming the deficit to seven on a pair of free throws from
Asha Stegall with 8:55 to play, pulling to 43-36. Spring Hill continued to pull away in the fourth quarter until Tuskegee used a three-pointer from
Taylor Miller to cut the deficit to 52-43 with 2:50 to play. However, Spring Hill hit five free throws in the last 60 seconds to hold on for the win.
Stegall and
Cheyanne Williams finished with eight points each for Tuskegee, who ended the night shooting 34.9 (15-of-43) percent from the floor. They shot a season-high 71.4 (5-of-7) percent from beyond the arc and 58.3 (14-of-24) percent from the free throw line.
Leah Washington led Spring Hil (7-5, 3-1 SIAC) with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Elise Reilly added 15. The Badgers finished the night shooting 34.7 (17-of-49) percent from the floor and 31.6 (6-of-19) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 82.6 (19-of-23) percent from the free throw line.
Tuskegee returns to action on the road Saturday at Kentucky State, with tip set for 1 pm (est). The game can be heard on the Tuskegee Digital Network.
