Tigerettes fall to Benedict

Three players in double figures for Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala.| Three players scored in double figures for the Tuskegee University women's basketball team, but it wasn't enough to overcome the balanced attack of Benedict College as the Lady Tigers pulled away in the second half for a 90-68 victory Wednesday night in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action at Booker T. Washington High School.

Tuskegee (5-7, 1-2 SIAC) battled Benedict (8-7, 4-1 SIAC) basket for basket in the first half, including a buzzer-beating shot at half by Jade Wilson to tie the score 42-all going into the locker room. However, it was a 32-14 outburst by the Lady Tigers that allowed Benedict to pull away in third quarter, before dribbling out the clock in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Teja Finley led Tuskegee with 12 points off the bench Wednesday night, connecting on 4-of-7 shots from the floor and all four of her free throws; while Wilson added 10 points off the bench for the Tigerettes. Asha Stegall added 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor, and five assists for Tuskegee in the loss. Meanwhile, senior Rachel Brownlee had her consecutive game streak of double digits snapped at 36 as she was held to just six points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor, while grabbing five rebounds.

Cheyanne Williams and Kayla Howard each added eight points for Tuskegee, who shot 40.6 (26-of-64) percent from the floor and just 10.5 (2-of-19) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 87.5 (14-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 16 Benedict turnovers.

Mikeisha Moore led Benedict with 23 points, while Zairra Harris added 16 points and seven rebounds. Destiny Betts also added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Shanaissa White finished with 12 for Benedict who shot 44.8 (30-of-67) percent from the floor. They also shot 40.7 (11-of-27) percent from beyond the arc and 59.4 (19-of-32) percent from the free throw line.

Tuskegee returns to action Monday night, hosting Paine in conference action beginning at 5:30 pm at Chappie James Arena.
