Tigerettes fall to Claflin on a rainy Monday night

Tuskegee returns to action Wednesday night at home against Benedict

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Senior Rachel Brownlee extended her consecutive double-digit streak to 36 games, but it wasn't enough as SIAC East Division-leading Claflin University defeated Tuskegee University 69-48 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action at Booker T. Washington High School Monday night.
 
Brownlee led Tuskegee (5-6, 1-1 SIAC) with 21 points on 50 (8-of-16) percent shooting from the floor and connected on both of her three-point attempts on the night. She was the lone Tigerette in double figures until Teja Finley connected on a pair of field goals down the stretch, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds.
 
Claflin (9-5, 4-0 SIAC) led wire-to-wire Monday night, jumping out to a 13-4 lead in the first quarter, before Tuskegee was able to trim the deficit to 18-10 with back-to-back baskets from Brownlee. The lead continued to grow in the first half as Claflin built a 42-17 advantage heading into the locker room.
 
However, Tuskegee came out in the second half and challenged the Panthers, outscoring them 31-27 in the final 20 minutes which included a 7-0 run over a pair of minutes in the fourth quarter.
 
Tuskegee finished the night shooting 33.3 (17-of-51) percent from the floor, which included 23.1 (3-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 64.7 (11-of-17) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 20 Claflin turnovers. Meanwhile, the Panthers finished the night shooting 43.5 (27-of-62) percent from the floor and 35.7 (5-of-14) percent from beyond the arc. Claflin also shot 62.5 (10-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 41-34.
 
Carnique Marks led a balanced Claflin attack with 13 points, while Dominique Williams finished with 12 points. Jhontay Giles finished with seven points and eight rebounds, while Dionna Marcus finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
 
Tuskegee returns to action Wednesday night against Benedict College, with tip set for 5:30 pm at Chappie James Arena. The game can be seen on the Tuskegee Digital Network.
