OZARK, Ala. | Playing their third game in 24 hours, the time caught up with the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers as they fell to Miles College 15-5 at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Championships, ending their season in the semifinals of the tournament.
Tuskegee (13-28), who fought to get into the tournament on the last day of the regular season, outlasted three other teams in the championship that included an upset of East Division top seed Albany State in the opening round.
The Golden Tigers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning
Jalen Luter and
Marc Kennedy led off the game with back-to-back singles. They each advanced a base after an infield error, with Luter scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Ricky Green. They added to the lead when Kennedy scored on a
Gemini Jackson single up the middle for the two-run lead.
After Miles trimmed the deficit to one, the Golden Tigers had a chance to add to the lead in the second inning; however, an outstanding defensive play by Miles keeping the ball in the ballpark off the bat of
Elgin Woodside ended the threat. The freshman narrowly missed his second homerun in two at-bats as hit ball was brought back into the ballpark by the Miles outfielder in centerfield for the second out of the inning.
From there, Miles took control as they scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull away from Tuskegee. The Golden Tigers were able to add three runs in the seventh inning on a bases clearing pinch-hit double by
Joseph Mauldin, but Miles ended the game with four runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Luter and Jackson each paced the Golden Tigers with a pair of hits in the game.
Daniel Croom (1-4) suffered the loss, working five innings and allowing eight runs off of eight hits.
The loss ends the career of six seniors for the Golden Tigers –
John Bryant,
Christopher Emerson,
Alexander Henderson,
Kenneth Johnson,
Miles Martin and
Stanley Smith.
