TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University softball team rode the arms of
Kaylin Finch and
Karisa Foye to a doubleheader sweep of LeMoyne-Owen in Southern Intercollegiate Conference (SIAC) play Saturday evening.
Tuskegee (15-27, 13-4 SIAC) won the opener of the doubleheader 10-0, pounding out hits while Finch (6-9) gave up just two hits in a complete-game effort. The freshman won her third consecutive game on the mound, allowing the two hits over five innings and striking out one – all while facing just one batter over the minimum in the win.
The freshman also led four players with a pair of hits each in the game, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two walks.
Cari Driver finished 2-for-3 (walk and run scored),
Jamaica Williams 2-for-3 (run scored and walk) and
Roneshia Rudolph 2-for-2 with two runs batted in (walk).
Tuskegee scored four runs in the first to jump ahead of the Magicians, then added two more in the fourth. The game was decided in the fifth after
Kenyah Smith scored to push the game to 7-0; before Foye stepped to the plate and belted her first homerun of the season (a three-run shot) for the walk-off victory.
The Lady Golden Tigers ran away from LeMoyne-Owen in game two of the doubleheader 8-0, using a pair of homeruns and a two-hitter from Foye (2-5). The senior finished with a complete game victory, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. Foye faced just two batters over the minimum in the win.
Tuskegee got homeruns from Finch and Williams, back-to-back in the third inning, that pushed the lead to 5-0 at the time. The Lady Golden Tigers walked off with another victory on Saturday when Finch singled home
Haley Plato with the eighth run of the game in the sixth inning.
Finch finished game two 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while
Sharde Thomas led four other players with a pair of hits each in the win. Thomas finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Williams finished 2-for-3 (two runs and two RBI), Smith 2-for-2 (two runs and one RBI) and
Chante Warner 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
The two teams finish the series Sunday afternoon at 1 pm on the Tuskegee University campus, as the magic number for Tuskegee is now down to three to clinch the top seed in the SIAC West Division with just seven conference games remaining.
