Baseball salvages split on Saturday

Jalen Luter records career-high five runs batted in during second game

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Tuskegee University baseball team was able to salvage a split in their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opening series against Kentucky State Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Tigers were held to just three hits by Kentucky State in a 14-2 loss, with Ricky Green and Ryan Green picking run scoring hits.

In the nightcap, Tuskegee (3-12, 1-1 SIAC) ran away from Kentucky State 8-4.

Tuskegee fell behind in the top of the second inning before Jalen Luter connected his first collegiate homerun on an 0-1 pitch, sending the ball well over the right field fence for a three-run homerun. After Christian Marshall reached on a one-out single up the middle, Ryan Green was hit by a pitch setting the stage Luter.

Tuskegee added three more in the third to stretch their lead to 6-1 at the time, starting the inning with a double by Samuel Glickman to right center. He advanced to third when Marc Kennedy hit a bouncing ball to short, who attempted to get Glickman at third but failed to do so. Ricky Green drove in Glickman from third, before Matthew Reed – the reigning SIAC Player of the Week – loaded the bases with a single.

The inning continued when Ryan Green singled through the left side, and Luter got his fourth RBI of the game on a groundout to first.

The Golden Tigers added a pair of runs in the fifth, answering Kentucky State (1-6, 1-1 SIAC). They got back-to-back doubles from Reed and Marshall, before Luter picked up his fifth RBI scoring Marshall.

Reed, Marshall and Luter each picked up two hits in the win.

Trey Nelson (1-2) picked up the victory, working five innings and allowed three runs (none earned) off of six hits. He also struck out five. Jordyn Thomas picked his first save of the season, working the final two innings of striking out three.

The same two teams wrap up the series Sunday at 12 noon at Paterson Field.
